Its not the equipment, but how you use what you got…

I tried a lava shell massage a while ago at the Cheeca Lodge in Islamorada, the Florida Keys. I really enjoyed it. I liked it better than the traditional hot stone massages. The shells are filled with a mixture that start a chemical reaction that heat up the shells. There is sort a periodic popping sound as they continue to re-heat. Kind of like the sound the Pop Rocks candy makes. :-) Anyway, they get really hot and without the inconvenience of sometimes having water dripped on you, or having the stones cool off too quickly.

And yet, I haven’t seen many places offering them. I found them recently at a new spa I was visiting, and wanted to try it again. I ended up waiting for a while to go back to my treatment room. A long while… the reception told me eventually that my room was being prepared… When I got back to the room, therapist told me that the shells were not heating up appropriately. I didn’t know if they were that finicky, or if they weren’t used often at this spa and the chemical agents had a shelf life. So, my therapist improvised and said there were a couple of lava shells that would heat sufficiently and that she would use some of the stones, and that she also used her hands to get into the tough places that needed work.

Therefore I had this combination of therapies. As I laid there under her ministration, completely relaxed, I realized that truly, the most effective method of eliminating the knots was the work of the therapist’s hands. Its not the stones, or the lave shells, but a gifted therapist that really makes the most difference which is why when you find a great therapist it makes all the difference in the world. Don’t get me wrong, I will still try the lava shells and hot stone therapies at times, but sometimes the basics can be better when it’s at the hands of a skilled therapist.

Spa Robes — its all in the details….

I went to my usual spa today. A well respected spa with several locations in the area. But, lately I have been noticing that the spa robes haven’t been up to par. The belts of the robes all have strings hanging from them and frayed edges. The belts may sometimes be terry cloth, but the robes may not be, so there is a mismatch….

We want to sink into relaxation starting with the very minute we drape ourselves in that robe. The robe should be big, comfy and just envelop us as we begin our journey into relaxation at the spa.

It’s a splurge to be treating myself to the spa, and so I want to feel a little indulged and a bit luxurious in my robe. Frayed robes are not part of the image. It bothers me that they ignore small details like this. Yes, service is absolutely important, but in a frayed robe, it just doesn’t feel special or like the indulgence that the spa visit is….

So, today I was quite surprised when I found a brand new robe, with matching belt in the locker! I thought, FINALLY…. And yet, as I sat in the meditation lounge, I noticed that there were still spa-goers in the old mismatched and frayed robes… Clearly the budget is not allowing for a complete overhaul of the robes at once, but little by little, and so it’s the luck of the draw????

And yet I noticed they had enough fund to recently replace all the locks on the lockers. Hmmmm, not sure that locks come to the top of mind in what I think when I think of the spa…. And I never had any issues with the locks before, so was this really where they needed to make the investments, rather than doing away with the tattered belts and robes?

On my last trip to the Spa at the Bellagio hotel in Las Vegas, I found a really good robe that I liked. It had that heavy draping weight to it that again, comforts and envelops you. It was terry cloth layer on the inside, but then had a soft cotton layer on the outside. I found them in a range of colors from plush necessities.

Now I have a nice robe to relax in at home. Perhaps my local spa will have to be BYOR… bring your own robe…

Coconut Surrender

I read an article, entitled “The Coconut Craze” recently in the October/November 2010 issue of Organic Spa Magazine about the health and beauty benefits of coconut oil. In it, the author, Mary Beth Janssen, writes about why Coconut oil is all the rage.

She indicates that it is often used in Ayurvedic rituals for health and beauty. That the oil “can have dramatic rejuvenating effects on the skin…working wonders as a “deep moisturizer, emollient and lubricant for all skin types. It works on facial skin, hands, feet and full-body massage, as well.” She hails it as “one of the most nourishing products you can massage through you hair and onto your scalp.”

I recently had the Deep Coconut Surrender Massage at the Spa at The Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas. I admit I initially selected the massage because it was 70 minutes in duration. (Let’s face it, we all prefer more time getting massaged), but it indicates that it has more concentration on the back, neck and shoulders (my troubles spots.), but it was also listed in their menu of services as “heated indulgence”, which was the clincher for me in living the Sámas motto.

Warm coconut oil was dripped on the body and massaged in. The scent of coconut and the warm oil and slow drip, completely indulged the senses, and it was one of the most relaxing massages I have had in a while. And there was the added benefit that my skin was hydrated, which was a definite plus in the middle of a desert.

What is Sámas?

Sámas is a Gaelic expression meaning an indulgence of the senses. And for me, a spa trip is plenty indulgent and one that involves so many of the senses – the sounds of relaxing music, the serene décor that the eyes view, the smell of the aromatherapy scents such as lavender, or sandalwood, the taste of chilled water infused with fruits or the herbal teas and the touch as you are in the caring hands of your therapist.

I love to spa. I love that indulgence. Over the years I had collected a number of spas I wanted to visit “someday”. I ripped pages out of magazines, so the next time I found myself planning a trip somewhere, I had the information of a spa that I could go to. And year after year, I collected these spas, and year after year I went to the same spas over and over again.

I decided to take a look at my file folder of spas. The finance professional in me, started to do some data analysis and I saw that I had over 500 spas on my “someday” list. Even at the rate of 1 spa per week (knowing that many of these places require travel) it would still take me over 10 years to get to them all!!!!!

Now, I would gladly quit my job and devote myself to that, but there is a little matter of the requisite income to pay for all these spa trips.  In the interim, I created this website as a spa forum. Until I can visit a spa, I welcome the comments of others who have been to the spa. The 500 spas are just the tip of the surface and I welcome additions to the list.

I also want to make more of an effort to visit new and different spas than my usual haunts and to take some of that “someday” and move it to “today”. So my goal is to hit as many new spas as I can in the next year, some local some requiring some travel and documenting those experiences here.
